The C.S.S. H.L. Hunley sank off Sullivan’s Island, S.C., after sinking the U.S.S. Housatonic. That marked the first time in history a submarine sank a warship. It was more than 50 years later before it was done again – during World War I. The Hunley’s wreckage was found in 1996 – although there are reports it was found in the 1970’s – and a recovery mission was launched. On Tuesday, August 8, 2000, the Hunley will be returned to port – after 136 years under water. The following sites provide some interesting background to the story. The Hunley:
