Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens:  Flow Chart

 

 

Suspected Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure occurs

 

ê

Immediately wash area with soap and water and/or flush with water and seek first aid if needed

 

ê

Employee reports incident to Supervisor

Employee and Supervisor complete BBP Suspected Exposure Report Form

School Nurse can assist with first aid and assessment of occurrence if needed

 

ê

Employee/Supervisor contacts  BBP Exposure/Worker’s Compensation Coordinator who facilitates an appointment for medical evaluation

BBP Exposure/Worker’s Compensation Coordinator assures PHG (District 50’s Health Care Provider) receives:

BBP Suspected Exposure Report

Copy of Employee’s Job Description

Source identity and HBV/HIV status if known

Employee’s HBV status and other relevant medical information

PHG (District’s Health Care Provider):

Evaluates suspected exposure incident

Arranges for any lab testing if indicated

Notifies employee of results of all testing results

Provides counseling regarding the exposure

Provides post-exposure prophylaxis, if indicated

(Items above are confidential)

Sends a written opinion to BBP Exposure/Worker’s Compensation Coordinator:  documentation that employee was informed of evaluation results,  the need for further follow-up,  and whether HBV vaccine was received

Employee receives a copy of the medical written opinion and follows medical recommendations

 

ê

BBP Exposure Coordinator/District’s Lead Nurse/Safety Committee which meets quarterly:

Reviews circumstances of all BBP Exposures (BBP Coordinator assures Employee’s identifiable information is removed)

Reviews medical recommendations and supervisor’s report (Without Employee’s identifiable information)

Recommends prevention strategies to Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources
