Contract Status

Induction (First-Year) Contract

Issued to the teacher who has completed an approved teacher-training program inside the state, passed the PRAXIS and has less than one year of teaching experience in public schools.  Note: This is a one-year nonrenewable contract.  The teacher who successfully completes the induction year and who is not rehired by the district may seek employment in another district at the annual contract level.  Teachers who do not successfully complete the induction year are eligible for employment under a one-year nonrenewable provisional contract in their district or in another district.

Provisional Contract

Issued to the teacher who did not successfully complete the induction year. Note: Teachers who successfully complete the provisional contract year are eligible for employment under an annual contract in their district or in another district.  Teachers who do not successfully complete their provisional contract year may not be employed as a teacher in the state until they have completed twelve hours of additional college coursework.  The coursework must include six hours toward recertification and six hours related to the weaknesses identified through their formal evaluation.  Such teachers may then be employed for one more provisional year.

Annual Contract Teachers

Teachers who successfully complete an induction contract year or a provisional contract year are eligible for employment under an annual contract.  Also, teachers from out-of-state with one or more years may be employed under an annual contract.  Note: No teacher may be employed as an annual contract teacher for more than two years.  Teachers who do not successfully complete their second annual contract year may not be employed as a teacher for a minimum of two years.  They must complete twelve hours of additional college coursework, including six hours toward recertification and six hours related to weaknesses identified by their formal evaluation.  Such teachers may then be employed for up to two more years at the annual contract level.

Continuing Contract

Issued to the teacher who has successfully completed the annual contract requirements.  This contract is transferable to any district in the state where such teacher is employed.
