Position Description

 

POSITION TITLE:    Assistant Superintendent for Instruction

 

            Department:      Instruction

            Reports To:      Superintendent

           

            SUMMARY:  Assists the Superintendent substantially and effectively in the task of providing leadership in developing, overseeing and managing the day-to-day operations of educational programs and services for the District.  Plans, develops, and implements functions related to curriculum, instruction, and staff development to ensure that each student is provided with the richest educational experience the district can provide.

           

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. Other duties may be assigned.

 

Þ      Provides leadership in planning and conducting curriculum studies including special programs for new courses, funding, staffing requirements, and curriculum impact.

Þ      Participates in the selection of textbooks and provides guidance concerning textbook and other instructional material usage.

Þ      Oversees the development and implementation of instructional programs.

Þ      Directs creation of and edits for publication all curriculum guides and materials prepared by and to be distributed among the instructional staff.

Þ      Assists in determining the types of programs needed by the schools and makes appropriate recommendations.

Þ      Provides input on professional development activities for the district.  Works with Staff Development to develop and implement programs that address curriculum needs.

Þ      Manages instructional departments including Gifted and Talented, Media, Bilingual, K-12 Music and Art and Elementary Science programs.

Þ      Assists in the research and testing for measuring the effectiveness of the total educational program throughout the district.

Þ      Monitors the latest research, trends and developments in all areas of education and interprets these matters for staff as necessary.

Þ      Observes teachers in their classrooms and provides feedback for the enhancement of the teacher-learning situation when requested by principals.

Þ      Assists in studies and research in the areas of enrollment growth, staffing and building needs.

Þ      Administers Chapter I, Chapter 2, and other federal grant programs.

Þ      Develops District instructional budget.

Þ      Assists in the development of district policies and administrative rules.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manages the Instructional Department staff.  Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of the Instructional Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

SC Certification as secondary or elementary supervisor or principal.  Minimum 5 years of successful teaching experience.  Advanced graduate work in education areas of curriculum development, supervision, instructional practices and research.  Practical experience in instructional management, curriculum planning, implementation and evaluation, and successful supervisory experience. Must be able to effectively deal with the public and staff both in person and on the phone.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.  Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.  Ability to effectively present information to administrators, public groups/community, and board of education.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

 

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both oral and written communication.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and the Board of Education policies.

Occasionally, yet essential to this position, the individual must meet deadlines with severe time constraints, interacting with the public and other workers.  Occasionally the position requires the employee to work irregular or extended hours, direct responsibility for the safety, well being or work output of other people and meet multiple demands from several people.
