Position Description
POSITION TITLE: Career and Technology Guidance Counselor
QUALIFICATIONS: 1. SC Certificate in Secondary Guidance Counseling
2. Masters Degree
3. Three years classroom experience required
4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
REPORTS TO: Career and Technology Director
JOB GOALS: To implement the district’s comprehensive counseling program for career and technology secondary students; to consult with and assist teachers, parents, and staff to enhance their effectiveness in helping students; to protect the confidentiality of student records; and to provide appropriate support to secondary career and technology educational programs.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.
Present information to all district
students relative to the career and technology preparation, training
and placement.
2.
Emphasize the Life and Career
Characteristics to all potential students including: Integrity, Self Direction,
Global Perspective, Perseverance, Work Ethic and Interpersonal Skills.
3.
Work collaboratively with feeder
schools to promote career and technology programs.
4.
Meet with small groups of students
to explain career and technology programs.
5.
Conduct or coordinate presentations
and/or seminars to provide information as needed or requested at feeder and
middle schools.
6.
Assist students in developing
immediate and long-range career and technology plans by analyzing and
evaluating students’ abilities, interests, skills and achievement.
7.
Work with students using varied
resources in planning personal, educational, and occupational goals.
8.
Assist students in evaluating goals
as they relate to career and technology education and training.
9.
Participate in any interventions
required for career and technology students.
10. Provide
individual counseling for students in the areas of personal/social,
educational/academic, and career/technology education.
11. Provide
small group counseling based on student surveys of interest and need.
12. Provide
consultation and feedback to parents, staff members, and community agencies
regarding strategies to help students.
13. Make
referrals to outside sources when extended counseling or support is necessary.
14. Counsel
and support students and their families facing emergency situations and make
appropriate outside referrals.
15. Provide
campus wide programs for students to address personal/social,
educational/academic, and career/technology education concerns.
16. Plan
and evaluate the career and technology counseling program.
17. Promote
positive working relationships with students, staff, and members of the
community.
18. Serve
in an advisory capacity to support all career and technology programs.
19. Pursue
continuous professional growth by keeping current with educational developments
and literature in the field of career and technology guidance.
20. Develop
and maintain a library of pertinent career and technology information available
to students, parents, and staff.
21. Perform
other tasks and assume other responsibilities as may from time to time be
assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises students and other activities as directed by the Director.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Certificate in Guidance Counseling, Masters Degree in Secondary Guidance Counseling, and three years classroom experience. Must be able to effectively deal with the public and staff both in person and on the phone.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information to administrators, top management, public groups/community, and Board of Education.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plain and solid geometry and trigonometry.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to define problems, gathers data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Ability to develop effective working relationships with staff, students, parents and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and the Board of Education policies.
