Position Description

 

POSITION TITLE:    Custodian I

            SUMMARY:  Keeps the district's school buildings safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, so that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program.

           

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. Other duties may be assigned.

 

Þ      Cleans and maintains all boilers and other major equipment.

Þ      Supervises and participates in necessary painting and general repairs to plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and general mechanical areas.

Þ      Assists general mechanics in remodeling and renovation work.

Þ      Generally supervises and maintains the school grounds.

Þ      Assists in snow removal.

Þ      Supervises and participates in the general cleaning and maintenance of the school building.

Þ      Requisitions and receives supplies and equipment, and maintains necessary inventories.

Þ      Assumes responsibility for the general security and fire safety of the building.

Þ      Performs emergency repair or cleaning services as needed.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma or GED. Demonstrated aptitude for successful completion of the tasks assigned.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, other employees and/or students.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply simple understanding to carry out detailed but basic written and/or oral instructions.

 

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to develop effective working relationships with staff and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and the Board of Education policies.

The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75+ pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is occasionally required to sit.  The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward.  The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climb ladders.  The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors.  The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment.  The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays.  The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
