Position Description

 

POSITION TITLE: Instructional Specialist

 

                        Department:    School Based

                        Reports To:     Principal

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES.  Other duties may be assigned.

 

Þ    Works with principals and teachers to implement state and local academic achievement standards.

Þ    Assists teachers in diagnosing language arts and mathematics proficiency and provides recommendations for correcting deficiencies by:

  1. Administering assessments to students new to the district.
  2. Administering alternative assessments when teachers request additional diagnostic information.
  3. Conferring with teachers concerning results of assessments administered and cooperatively planning teaching strategies in response to data.

Þ    Aids teachers in developing a schedule that allows adequate time to deliver instruction.

Þ    Assists teachers in determining when adjustments are necessary to focus instruction on identified areas of need.

Þ    Assists teachers in identifying or developing appropriate alternative strategies for grouping.

Þ    Assists principal and staff in monitoring the progress of students throughout the year.

Þ    Assists principal and staff in identifying best practice and scheduling staff development activities.

Þ    Identifies and prescribes specific instructional materials, ideas, and techniques.

Þ    Presents techniques through sharing sessions or demonstration lessons related to designated needs.

Þ    Works with individual and small groups of students on an as needed basis.

Þ    Assists principal and teachers in working with parents of students needing assistance in achieving district academic standards by prescribing activities and, when appropriate, by participating in parent/teacher conferences.

Þ    Coordinates Universal Screenings for RtI.

Þ    Oversees progress monitoring process by:

  1. Training teachers/interventionists and assisting with assessments.
  2. Assuring accuracy of data entry.

Þ    Assists principal and teachers in the interpretation of standardized test results by reviewing the school's instructional strengths and weaknesses, identifying the areas of greatest need, and planning cooperatively for the remediation of student deficiencies.

Þ    Assists with placement of students in appropriate interventions.*

Þ    Participates on Professional Learning Community Leadership Team.

Þ    Teaches small groups of students identified for intervention.

Þ    Leads and monitors the process for the development of grade level/subject area common formative assessments and reviews the created products.

Þ    Compiles the common formative assessments for all grades/subject areas.

Þ    Assists with monitoring of classroom instruction/assessments and provides recommendations under the leadership of the principal.

Þ    Coordinates the textbook adoption process with the principal and teachers in the school.

Þ    Observes teachers and offers insights for the enhancement of the teacher-learner situation through conferences or modeling lessons.

Þ    Assists in the development and maintenance of instructional management systems (report cards, continuous assessment records, etc.)

Þ    Plans and works cooperatively with other instructional specialists and their principals to ensure well-coordinated curricula by participating in district meetings, attending relevant workshops and conferences, and sharing information with other teachers.

Þ    Assists teachers in long-range planning through integrated units of study and compiling materials and resources.

 

*Student intervention services are flexible and require consistent monitoring and regrouping.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises students.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Current S.C. Teacher certification, Masters Degree with S. C. Administrative Certification, five years teaching experience, and experience in the development of reading material and equipment.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information to administrators, top management, public groups/community, and Board of Education.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plain and solid geometry and trigonometry.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to develop effective working relationships with staff, students, parents and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and the Board of Education policies.
