SUMMARY: Employs guidance and intervention techniques
to students enrolled or previously enrolled at Central Alternative School. Aids in problem solving services to students
and provides a link to other service agencies within the community. Serves as a
member of diagnostic teams and members of educational planning and placement
committees and provides biological, psychological, and sociological assessment
information.
JOB GOAL: To
use effectively all appropriate resources to help alternative placed students
resolve such personal, emotional, and social problems as interfere with their
adjustment to a regular school environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. Other duties may be assigned.
1.
Works
with teachers and director in identifying high risk students;
2.
Performs
individual counseling services with students to correct those personal, social,
or emotional problems related to their educational and social progress;
3.
Performs
casework service with parents as an integral part of the task of helping
students, to increase the parents’ understanding, their active participation in
resolving their child’s problems and their knowledge and use of appropriate
resources available;
4.
Establishes
and maintains effective liaison with the various offices and agencies within
the community that may provide specialized or professional help to students and
their parents, and serves as the referral agent to those offices and agencies;
5.
Consults
and collaborates with school personnel and social agency personnel in gathering
and giving information on a case to help resolve problems;
6.
Refers
students to, and serves as a liaison with, such outside agencies as the
Department of Social Services, the Department of Juvenile Justice, Mental
Health, and the like, as appropriate;
7.
Serves
as a liaison between home, school, and social agencies when considerable
follow-up is necessary to resolve problems;
8.
Assists
students directly toward adjustment or readjustment back to their home school;
9. Other related duties as
required.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Master’s Degree in counseling and at least three
years of successful experience in social work/human services and such
alternative qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read
and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical
procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business
correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present
information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients,
customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to work
with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and
fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply
concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical
situations.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to
define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in
mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete
variables.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to apply knowledge of current
research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement
lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of
students to whom assigned. Ability to
establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers,
parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral
communication.
