Position Description

 

POSITION TITLE:    Network Administrator

SUMMARY:  Manages and maintains the network used by the district’s data, instructional, video, telephone, communications, and security applications.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

 

·        Maintains all the district’s server operating systems.

·        Plans and manages all server upgrades and patches for the operating systems.

·        Manages all network client installations, upgrades, and patches.

·        Manages the district email system (Groupwise®).

·        Manages the installation of all server-based software and the workstation clients required to run that software.

·        Manages all network security, including user access and firewall access.

·        Manages all BorderManager®  functionality on the network.

·        Manages all ZENworks®  functionality on the network.

·        Manages all PacketShaper®  functionality on the network.

·        Manages the integration of network components at all sites and on the district’s backbone.

·        Maintains all certifications required for the successful implementation of this job.

·        Manages all switches and routers on the network.

·        Manages all remote access to district and school networks.

·        Trains technicians in all areas of network management.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Associate degree or equivalent required.  Novell NetWare certifications required (CNE or CNA).  Related work experience preferred. Computer skills are necessary.  Candidate must be able to effectively deal with the public both in person and on the phone.  Cisco® and/or Microsoft® certifications preferred.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

The successful candidate must possess the ability to read, interpret, and understand general technology periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. The candidate must possess the ability to write accurate and detailed instructions for end users.  The candidate should have the ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or others who use the network and networked resources.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

 

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to develop effective working relationships with staff and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and the Board of Education policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to walk and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and peripheral vision. Employee must be able to distinguish the difference between bells, buzzers, beeps, etc.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet, but some equipment may have moderately loud fans. The employee is continuously interacting with staff.
