SUMMARY:  Provide a parenting skills development service to children and their families. Serve as a member of school collaborations and partnerships in planning and providing services to help children be successful in school and life.  Effectively uses all appropriate resources to help students and families resolve personal, emotional, and social problems that interfere with their adjustment to school and their capacity to enjoy the fullest benefits of the education offered.

 

 

 

JOB GOAL: To use effectively all appropriate resources to help parents be the first, most influential and forever teachers in the development of their child.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. Other duties may be assigned. 

 

1.      Participates in all family literacy training opportunities and seeks mastery of Parents As Teachers (PAT) and Parent and Child Time Together (PACT) parenting curricula. 

2.      Conducts/coordinates parent/child workshops focusing on appropriate developmental learning activities.

3.      Identifies parents who do not have a high school diploma and encourage their participation in basic skills/literacy instruction, GED instruction or adult education, as appropriate.

4.      Conducts the developmental screening of children birth to five in the SC Reads program to determine needs and assist in services to meet needs.

5.      Consults/collaborates with appropriate school personnel, case management personnel, and social agency personnel in gathering and giving information about a child or family’s special needs.

6.      Serves as a liaison between parents, children, community and school.

7.      Performs other related duties that foster academic growth and parenting growth in children birth to age five and their families.

8.      Performs casework service with parents as an integral part of the task of helping students, to increase the parents' understanding, their constructive participation in resolving their child's problems, and their knowledge and use of appropriate resources available in the community.

9.      Establishes and maintains effective liaison with the various offices and agencies within the community that may provide specialized or professional help to students and their parents, and serves as the referral agent to those offices and agencies.

10.  Consults/collaborates with school personnel and social agency personnel in gathering and giving information on a case, and in establishing and planning for respective roles in helping to re-orient and motivate students.

11.  Maintains an inventory of services offered by community health and welfare agencies.

12.  Makes home visits for the purpose of gathering helpful information on a student’s background.

13.  Serves as a liaison between home, school, and social agencies when considerable follow-up is necessary.

14.  Keeps sufficient records of cases for use by school staff members and outside agencies.

15.  Performs other duties as assigned.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises children.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Associate or Bachelor Degree in Psychology or Social Work, Human Services or related field.  One year successful work experience in human services.

Must be able to effectively deal with the public, staff, students and parents both in person and on the phone.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, other employees and/or students.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to deal with problems involving a variety of concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, parents, staff and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.

Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and the Board of Education policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to walk and reach with hands and arms.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.  The employee will be required to lift and move manipulatives for use in parenting activities.  The employee may be required to lift and place children and infants in car seats.  The employee must be able to drive to different locations within the district on a daily basis and occasionally out of the district. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and peripheral vision. Employee must be able to distinguish the difference between bells, buzzers, beeps, etc.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
