Position Description

 

POSITION TITLE:         Social Studies Instructional Coach

            Department:  Instruction

            Reports To:     Assistant Superintendent for Instruction

                       

SUMMARY:    

 

The Social Studies Instructional Coach will provide instructional support and coaching to all schools as they work to ensure that each student is able to reach his or her academic potential. The Social Studies Instructional Coach’s primary role is to mentor and support teaching and learning through modeling, coaching, and professional development to improve and accelerate student achievement through quality curriculum and instruction.   The Social Studies Instructional Coach will work with social studies teachers to support best practices in using data, provide analysis of district and school-wide trends in instruction, and make recommendations about potential next steps to address areas of need.  The Social Studies Instructional Coach will observe instructional delivery and provide feedback to enhance and support the development of each social studies teacher’s content area, support social studies teachers in the design of units and lesson development of their year-long curriculum, analyze data in order to modify curriculum and forms of assessment to meet students’ needs, and work with the academic staff in schools to support sharing of best practices.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  (Other duties may be assigned.)

·         Works with Elementary, Middle and Secondary  principals and teachers to develop and implement plan for the district’s achievement in Social Studies

·         Lead district teachers in the understanding of grade level standards and the development of uniform pacing guides;

·         Research and provide content knowledge and resources to staff;

·         Provide professional development on effective and innovative practices through coaching sessions, demonstration lessons, study groups, and professional development sessions;

·         Collaborate with administrators and teachers to collect and analyze data, conduct needs assessments, and evaluate student and program effectiveness;

·         Facilitate the induction of beginning teachers or those new to the district;

·         Lead in the design and implementation of district-wide benchmark assessments; and

·         Analyze the results of the benchmark assessments advising teachers and instructional leaders on areas of strengths and needs

·         Monitor the progress of students’ performance throughout the year and identify timely interventions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

·         Prior experience developing units and lessons with the end goal in mind, using standards to develop lessons and familiarity with multiple forms of assessment;

·         Experience leading social studies teachers to improve instructional delivery;

·         Strong knowledge of social studies content area and pedagogical practices to ensure high level engagement and academic mastery for students with low academic performance;

·         Achieved significant academic gains as a social studies teacher; and

·         Experience in analyzing data to adjust curriculum to ensure increased student mastery;

·         Strong record of assisting students to achieve academic success;

·         Significant experience with social studies curriculum development and daily lesson planning;

·         Have social studies/history certification in one or more areas;

·         Advanced degrees in the content or in Curriculum or Administration preferred;

·         At least 5 years of social studies teaching, preferably in various content and/or levels; and

·         Excellent organizational, communication, and facilitation skills.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises students and assumes other supervisory duties as assigned by building principal.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

South Carolina Teacher's Certification.  Bachelor's Degree in the area of major study. Must be able to effectively deal with students, parents and staff both in person and on the phone.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write reports, procedure manuals and business correspondence. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the business community.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plain and solid geometry and trigonometry.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

 

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram forms and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and the Board of Education policies.
