SUMMARY: Develops and maintains a structured mentoring
program with business and community volunteers for one-to-one assistance with
at-risk students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.
1. Plans
and organizes the HOSTS center through instructional resource management, room
set up, and schedules.
2. Assists
the teachers and principal in the selection of at-risk students who are in need
of a structured mentoring program.
3. Recruits
mentors from businesses, agencies, and the community at large.
4. Provides
orientation and training about the HOSTS program, materials used, and duties to
volunteers serving as mentors.
5. Establishes
procedures for recognizing and retaining volunteer mentors.
6. Arranges
mentor schedules to accommodate volunteers and to establish continuing
relationships with students.
7. Maintains
information about mentors’ availability and attendance.
8. Assesses
the needs and accomplishments of students on a regular basis.
9. Develops
mentor-friendly personalized student lesson plans that meet the individual
needs, interests, and abilities of students to insure successful mentoring
experiences.
10. Maintains
and provides information about student progress to mentors and classroom
teachers.
11. Guides
the mentoring process toward achievement of both school and district curriculum
goals.
12. Collects
and analyzes data for the evaluation of program effectiveness and recommends
such changes and improvements as are needed.
13. Disseminates
and interprets the program evaluation results to administrators, instructional
specialists, classroom teachers, and district office staff, as appropriate.
14. Plans
and works cooperatively with other HOSTS coordinators and their principals to
ensure a well-coordinated curricula by participating in district meetings,
attending relevant workshops and conferences and sharing information with other
teachers and/or administrators.
15. Maintains
professional relationships with students, faculty, and mentors; follows ethics
of the teaching profession; and promotes the welfare of students at all times.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises students
and mentors and assumes other supervisory duties as assigned by building
principal.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job

EDUCATION
and/or EXPERIENCE:
1. South
Carolina Teacher’s Certification.
2. Bachelor’s
Degree in the area of major study.
3. Ability
to effectively deal with students, parents, staff, business community, and
community at large.
4. Such alternatives
to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read,
analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals,
technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure
manuals. Ability to respond to common
inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the
business community.
PRESENTATION SKILLS:
Ability to effectively
present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, top
management, public groups/community, businesses, agencies, and Board of
Education. employees, clients,
customers, and/or the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to work with
mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and
fundamentals of plain and solid geometry and trigonometry.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to define
problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of
technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several
abstract and concrete variables.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to develop
effective working relationships with staff, students, parents, business
community, and community at large both in person and on the phone.
