SUMMARY: Instructs students in activities designed to
promote social, physical, and intellectual growth in the subject matter and
skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able and
responsible men and women.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Confers with parents
on a daily basis.
2. Works with
students individually to improve behaviors and attitudes toward school,
students and teachers.
3. Confers with
students’ regular teachers to plan lessons for students.
4. Works with the
principal, guidance counselor and teachers to place students in the alternative
program.
5. Works with the
principal, guidance counselor and teachers during the transition of students
back to the regular school program.
6. Teaches
curriculum based on individual needs as defined by the regular teacher.
7. Creates a
classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate based on
the needs of individual students.
8. Takes all
necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials,
and facilities.
9. Employs a
variety of instructional techniques and instructional media consistent with the
physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of
the individuals or student groups involved in the alternative program.
10. Guides the
learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals (including state
standards) and --in harmony with the district goals --establishes clear
objectives for all lessons, units, and projects.
11. Assists the
administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and
conduct, and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of alternative
classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a
fair and just manner.
12. Assesses the
accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as
required by the principal.
13. Evaluates
students’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records and prepares
progress reports.
14. Encourages
students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior before returning to
the regular classroom.
15. Diagnoses the
learning disabilities of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of
district specialists as required.
16. Maintains
accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy,
and administrative regulations.
17. Is available to
students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional
day.

QUALIFICATION
REQUIREMENTS: To perform this
job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Four-year
degree in area of major study.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid South
Carolina Teaching Certificate in area of study required.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read,
analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals,
technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports,
business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present
information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients,
customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to work
with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and
fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts
such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical
situations.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve
practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations
where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of
instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to apply knowledge of current
research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement
lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of
students to whom assigned. Ability to
establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and
parents; skill in oral and written communication.
