SUMMARY: Provide a parenting skills development
service to children and their families. Serve as a member of school
collaborations and partnerships in planning and providing services to help
children be successful in school and life. Plans, assists, and
oversees developmentally appropriate activities for preschool and school age
students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Conducts/coordinates parent/child daily
workshops focusing on appropriate developmental learning activities.
2. Creates a classroom environment that is
conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the
children.
3. Assists in the identification of parents
who do not have a high school diploma and encourage their participation in
basic skills/literacy instruction, GED instruction or adult education, as
appropriate.
4. Conducts the developmental screening of
children birth to five in the SC Reads program to determine needs and assist in
services to meet needs.
5. Attends all state meetings required by
the State Department of Education as part of the SC READS training
requirements.
6. Serves as a liaison between parents,
children, community and school.
7. Performs other related duties that foster
academic growth and parenting growth in children birth to age five and their
families.
8. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct
records as required by grant administration and district policy.
9. Consults/collaborates with school
personnel and social agency personnel in gathering and giving information on a
case, and in establishing and planning for respective roles in helping to
re-orient and motivate students.
10. Makes
provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related
purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so
under reasonable terms.
11. Makes home visits for the purpose of
gathering helpful information on a student’s background.
12. Plans and supervises purposeful activities for
childcare workers.
13. Provides supplemental educational
services to students in grades K-4-3rd grade for a portion of the
day at both SC READS sites.
14. Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises children, adult
education participants, and childcare assistants.

EDUCATION
and/or EXPERIENCE:
South Carolina Teaching Certificate, Bachelors
Degree, or such alternative to the above qualifications as the Board may find
appropriate and acceptable. Must be able to effectively deal with the public,
staff, students and parents both in person and on the phone.
LANGUAGE
SKILLS:
Ability to communicate frequently with students,
preschoolers, adult workers, and the general public. Ability to establish rapport with parents and
students served. Ability to communicate
respect for participants and be responsive to their needs. Ability to write routine reports and
correspondence. Ability to present
information in one-on-one and small group situations to students, parents, and
other employees.
MATHEMATICAL
SKILLS:
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions,
percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING
ABILITY:
Ability to deal with problems involving a
variety of concrete variables in standardized situations.
OTHER
SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Ability to develop effective working
relationships with students, parents, staff, and the school community. Ability
to communicate clearly and concisely.

and the Board of Education policies.
PHYSICAL

While performing the duties of this job, the
employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk
and reach with hands and arms. The
employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. The employee will be required to lift and
move manipulatives for use in parenting activities. The employee may be required to lift and
place children and infants in car seats.
The employee must be able to drive to different locations within the
district on a daily basis and occasionally out of the district. Specific vision abilities required by this
job include close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision. Employee must be able to distinguish the
difference between bells, buzzers, beeps, etc.

The noise level in the work environment is
usually quiet. The employee is continuously interacting with the public,
