Position Description

 

POSITION TITLE:    Transportation Assistant

SUMMARY:  Responsible for assisting the Transportation Supervisor in the organization, administration, supervision in the area of the school district transportation system in accordance with state law and policies along with school district policies.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

 

Þ    Sets up and monitors the Special Education and Kindergarten routes.

Þ    Arrives at the bus shack prior to the arrival of the first bus.

Þ    Ensures that the student gates that allow Pinecrest students to pass through the bus parking lot are unlocked in the morning and afternoon and secured after the children pass through them.

Þ    Controls access to the bus parking area each morning and afternoon.

Þ    Checks in and supervises the parking of all buses in the Bus Parking lot each morning.

Þ    Ensures that all passengers are unloaded from the bus at the unloading point and only the driver is allowed to remain on board to park the bus.

Þ    Dispatches all buses from the parking lot in the afternoon.

Þ    Advises maintenance personnel of all mechanical deficiencies reported by the bus drivers.

Þ    Ensures that late bus slips are issued to bus students when appropriate.

Þ    Collects discipline slips from bus drivers and passes them directly to the Transportation Supervisor.

Þ    Spot-checks buses for damage as they enter the parking lot and reports finding to Transportation Supervisor.

Þ    Aids in securing substitute drivers.

Þ    Ensures that the safety patrol guard at GHS for Pinecrest students is in position.

Þ    Aides in the discipline of drivers in the absence of Transportation Supervisor.

Þ    Dispatches the bus schedule to pick up the students from the high schools and dispatches the scheduled bus from GHS and Emerald to the Career Center that transports these students.

Þ    Qualifies as a bus driver.

Þ    Directs additional support personnel in bus parking areas as necessary.

Þ    Performs other duties as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor.

 

 

 

 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists the Transportation Supervisor with the management of transportation personnel.  Aids in the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these employees.  Responsibilities include training employees planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma with two (2) years of college, two (2) years experience in transportation, two (2) years similar employment or a two-year technical degree in a related area.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write routine reports and correspondences.   Ability to effectively present information to administrators, top management, public groups/community, and Board of Education.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect date, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

 

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Personal Computer skills.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community.  Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and the Board of Education policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, seeing objects/persons at a distance, and ability to adjust focus.  Driving is necessary. Occasionally, yet essential to this position, the individual must meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with the public and staff in addition to meeting multiple demands from several people.  The employee is frequently required to work irregular or extended work hours, direct responsibility for the safety, well-being or work output of other people.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee has contact with oils or other petroleum products and may be exposed to gases or fumes. The employee occasionally works outside and is exposed to sunlight.  Working in temperatures below 32 degrees or above 100 degrees is possible. The employee occasionally walks on slippery surfaces and may get soaking wet.
