POSITION TITLE:    Transportation Supervisor

SUMMARY:  Responsible for the organization, administration, supervision in the area of the school district transportation system in accordance with state law and policies along with school district policies.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

 

̃    Organizes and implements a student transportation system within the policies of the Board of Education.

̃    Prepares bus routes and schedules for all public schools in the district.

̃    Recruits, interviews, trains, checks background and recommends for employment, transfer, promotion and release of all transportation personnel.

̃    Develops and implements maintenance plan for activity vehicles.

̃    Prepares and administers the transportation budget.

̃    Authorizes purchases in accordance with budgetary limitations and district needs.

̃    Maintains safety standards in conformance with state and insurance regulations and develops a program of preventive safety.

̃    Cooperates with school principals and others responsible for planning special school trips.

̃    Takes an active role in solving discipline problems occurring on school buses.

̃    Develops recommendations for future equipment and personnel needs based a survey of residents, distances and grade levels.

̃    Acts as a liaison with parents for complaints and special requests.

̃    Completes and dispatches accident reports.

̃    Submits all required reports to state authorities.

̃    Advises superintendent on road hazards for decision on school closing during inclement weather.

̃    Attends appropriate committee and staff meetings.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises Assistant Transportation Supervisor, Transportation Secretary, bus drivers, monitors and any other district transportation department personnel.  Supervises custodial services at the district office.  Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this unit.  Also directly supervises non-supervisory employees in the Administration Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing employees, planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Supervises mail and break rooms at district office

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

College Degree and four years experience in transportation, including two (2) years in a supervisory capacity, preferably in a school district.

 

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information to administrators, top management, public groups/community, and Board of Education.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram forms and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

 

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Personal Computer and spreadsheet skills. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community.  Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and the Board of Education policies.

Occasionally, yet essential to this position, the individual must meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with the public and staff in addition to meeting multiple demands from several people.  The employee is frequently required to work irregular or extended work hours, direct responsibility for the safety, well-being or work output of other people.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee has contact with oils or other petroleum products and may be exposed to gases or fumes. The employee occasionally works outside and is exposed to sunlight.  Working in temperatures below 32 degrees or above 100 degrees is possible. The employee occasionally walks on slippery surfaces and may get soaking wet.
