SUPPORT STAFF HIRING

Code GDF-R        Issued 10/03

The application process

Each individual seeking employment as a member of the support staff in the school district will apply in writing to the human resources office.

The assistant superintendent for human resources will maintain a file of prospective candidates with as much information available as possible on each candidate.

The employee must submit at the time of employment, all required personal information, data and documentation to the human resources office.

All candidates must have an application on file before an interview will be conducted at the district or school level.

The human resources office will also maintain a pool of substitutes for other classified positions.

The interview process

All applicants for classified positions must be screened by the human resources office prior to being interviewed by a principal/supervisor. The human resources office must screen all applicants for classified positions. Upon completion of the screening process by the human resources office, a listing of suitable applicants will be compiled and distributed to appropriate principal/supervisor.

When a vacancy occurs, the principal/supervisor must notify the human resources office. The human resources office will send appropriate applicant data to the principal/supervisor for his/her review. The principal/supervisor will interview all applicants sent to them by the human resources office unless the applicant is unavailable for an interview.

After all referred applicants have been interviewed by the principal/supervisor, he/she will make a recommendation to the assistant superintendent for human resources.

The principal/supervisor will not offer the job, nor state that he/she will make a recommendation, nor make any promises of employment to the applicant.

Once an applicant is recommended, the human resources office will request a criminal record history check from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) of past convictions for crimes.

The employment process

Once the superintendent selects a candidate, the applicant and principal/supervisor will be notified by the human resources office.

Paraprofessional instructional assistants are required to meet the “highly qualified” standard passed by Congress on January 8, 2002. The federal standard requires an associate’s degree, proof of 60 semester hours or 90-quarter hours of post-secondary work, or successfully completing an approved standardized test.
