Solar Sailing
http://www.planetary.org/solarsail/index2.html
In October, 2001, the Planetary Society and Cosmos Studios will launch Cosmos
1, the world’s first solar sail. It
will orbit Earth every 100 minutes at an altitude of 530 miles. Unlike other satellites, Cosmos 1 will
slowly increase its altitude using eight lightweight panels to catch the
“solar wind” – photons of light that will hit the panels and push Cosmos 1
along. This website has something for
everyone as the project moves toward launch.
Learn why and how the project is being done as you discover the
details of preparation. When Cosmos 1
is launched, you or your class can become part of the tracking team – Cosmos
1 will be visible through binoculars.
Science classes can collect data and be part of the reporting team
that will determine the efficiency of using the solar wind to propel ships
through space – such as a mission to Mars.

Bucket Buddies
http://www.k12science.org/curriculum/bucketproj
Are the organisms found in pond water the same all over the world? In this
Internet project, students in grades 1-5 can identify organisms in a water
sample, compare their findings with other participating classes, and look for
relationships and trends in the data collected by all project participants. If you don't want elementary school
students mucking about in a pond, there are instructions for teacher
collection of samples. Register now, and be prepared to send pond sample
identification findings by October 22, 2001. This site contains a great list
of links to help students identify local macro-invertebrates. There are also some great lesson plans for
related projects. Bucket Buddies is
developed and managed by the Center for Improved Engineering and Science
Education (CIESE).
