LiftOff! Math and Science Take Flight
http://www.aviationnow.com/content/ncof/ncflift.htm
LIFTOFF! makes the fascinating theory behind flight
concrete with online videos, classroom posters, and down-to-earth
explanations. The principles taught are reinforced with hands-on
activities. LIFTOFF! Uses a four-step lesson cycle:
Now Boarding engages students in the concept with an opening
discussion or activity; Test Flight outlines a hands-on activity that
demonstrates the concept; Landing revisits the Now Boarding question to
assess students' understanding of the concept; and Connecting Flight applies
and extends the concept into mathematics and other areas. Teachers can use this website to enrich
math curriculum with hands-on activities and math connections in the videos,
posters, and the Teacher's Guide; develop basic science concepts of forces
and motion, biology, density, gravity, air pressure, atmosphere, and
friction; extend social studies, current events, and introductory career
education to include the high-tech world of aviation; and tie the concepts
into existing curriculum or create cross-curricular unit on aviation. The Teacher's Guide provides needed
background and strategies that can be used to integrate the math and science
concepts into the classroom curriculum.
