School Renewal WebCenter
http://www.schoolrenewal.org
This website features strategies for improving instruction and for influencing learning by examining three “scripts” – academy, economy, and community – representing forces from beyond the school that are working to help shape what takes place in schools. Very few people think that school should focus solely on one of these areas. The fact is that learning almost always involves some balance of intellectual, workplace and social-emotional skills.  The School Renewal WebCenter is designed to help teachers, administrators, parents, and community
members think about new designs for learning based on a balance of these areas.  This site also provides thoughtful discussion of education’s challenges, organized under school excellence, class equity, and student engagement. This site also includes strategies and resources for improving the educational impact of schools on students.  It can help all of us think toward action and take action toward results.

Pieces of Science
http://www.sln.org/pieces/
This site is an online gallery of sixteen educational resources related to a collection of historical science objects.  The
Franklin Institute Science Museum and the Science Museum, London invited a group of teachers to select the science objects that would be interesting to study from several viewpoints.  They selected sixteen objects to study.  They had access to the actual objects and all the historical material that related to those objects.  They studied the object, its history, and its significance.  The teachers, then, developed classroom activities – for all grade levels – related to their encounters with the real objects.  The objects include Ben Franklin’s lightning rod, bicycles, the Armonica, the first electric tabulating machine, the coining press, daguerreotype cameras, Apollo 8, Apollo 10, Maillardet’s automaton, solar-powered vehicles, the lunar module, motion photography, the clone zone, Priestley’s physics project, and penicillin.  Each object comes with a set of historical information, visual aids, and lesson plans designed for audiences of all ages and abilities.

The Most Important People of the 20th Century
http://www.time.com/time/time100/
TIME magazine has profiled the 100 most important people of the 20th century.  You will find stories about those individuals who — for better or worse — most influenced the last 100 years.  Those persons are presented in five categories:  Leaders and revolutionaries, artists and entertainers, builders and titans, scientists and thinkers, and heroes and icons.  You’ll also read about the Most Important Person of the century.  This website also has links to other TIME magazine Top 100 lists:  Events of the Century, Phonies and Frauds of the Century, and the Worst Ideas of the Century.  There is a lot of history to be learned looking at what who tried when – and why.

Exit Plans:  Interstate Highways
http://www.interstate4u.com
This website provides “everything you need to know about every interstate exit in the USA” – and that’s the truth.  It’s an essential for any trip you’re planning – in addition to helping study geography.  Just give your starting city and state; then give your destination city and state.  You will get a detailed “Exit Plan,” including a set of driving instructions to the nearest interstate highway – then you get directions to your destination.  Unlike other map sites, Interstate4U gives you a list of every interstate exit along the way – with every gas station and convenience store, every restaurant (sit down and drive through), every hotel and motel, and other information.  It also includes mileage and estimated time along each interstate segment and it includes information on construction and work areas along the route.  The site also gives information about attractions along the way – tourist and historical.  Are we there yet?
