EDSITEment
http://edsitement.neh.gov
The National Endowment for the Humanities has created a collection of the
best resources for K-12 humanities teachers.
Links from this page cover the fields of social studies, history,
literature, foreign languages, art, and culture. These represent an in-depth, accurate,
ready-to-use set of Internet materials in all those areas. The site includes three special teaching
aids, a monthly calendar of historical events with links to related content,
a list of lesson plans and websites related to a different theme each month. This website helps students explore the “why”
related to each topic and area presented here.

Microbe!
http://www.microbe.org
The American Society for Microbiology developed this website as a
comprehensive resource for teachers and students in grades 6 and up. It’s a great site for parents who are
trying to decide if their student’s science project will start the next great
plague. The site has science news,
do-it-at-home activities, career information, and a neat (no pun intended) hand-washing
test for students and adults. Activities
help students learn about microbes from their “hands to the mighty Himalayas, landfills to oil spills, common
colds to uncommon cures, and more.
There are graphics generated from electron microscopes that show many
different types of microbes.

CNN Student News
http://fyi.cnn.com/fyi/index.html
CNN has combined its CNN NewsRoom and CNNfyi resources into a comprehensive educational
resource named "CNN Student News." The site is sponsored by
Harcourt and Riverdeep, both of which add resources
for students and teachers. For example, Riverdeep
has a link called "The World Wide Rumor Web," which examines urban
legends circulated through email and the web. They use specific
examples -- most of which are easily identified by everyone because we've
received an email about those at one time or another -- to teach exponential
growth, propaganda, statistics, and other concepts related to many of our
State standards. Every content area
has stories and current events that connect the news to curriculum in lots of
ways. There is some very neat stuff here -- stuff that will connect
curriculum to students – and their parents – through the news.
