Great Backyard Bird Count
http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc/
Scientists
and bird enthusiasts can learn a lot by knowing where the birds are. Now that
winter has gripped much of the continent, what are our birds doing? Bird populations are dynamic, they are
constantly moving. The Audubon Society
and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology want to take a snapshot of North American
bird populations and everyone
can help. It doesn't matter whether
you identify, count, and report the 5 species coming to your backyard feeder
or the 75 species you see during a day's outing to a wildlife refuge. The information you collect will be
combined with Christmas Bird Count and Project FeederWatch data to give
scientists a comprehensive picture of winter birds. Each year that these data are collected
makes them more important and meaningful.
Your participation in this year’s GBBC can help scientists understand
– and, thus, be able to help – all the birds in the Americas. Your data can help scientists answer
questions like:
- How will
this winter's snow and cold temperatures influence bird populations?
- Where are
the winter finches and other irruptive species?
- Will late
winter movements of many songbird and waterfowl species be as far north
as they were last year?

SC African American History
http://www.scafricanamericanhistory.com/
February
is Black History Month. BellSouth and its
partners have updated their online database of notable South Carolina African
Americans as part of their efforts to help schools celebrate and to inform
the public. This website can be useful by teachers and staff in presenting
lessons related to African American history and to acknowledge the
accomplishments of these significant South Carolina citizens. This website provides resources for helping
students and other citizens better understand the contributions made to our
state and the nation by these African Americans. This site promotes an
appreciation of diversity and can be useful as an educational and informative
resource. You can also download and
print the 2003 South Carolina African American History Calendar. There is also a place to nominate someone
for next year’s calendar.
