Genes and Traits

http://www.k12science.org/curriculum/genproj/

This worldwide project is a scientific search for the “dominant trait” – the one genetic trait that everyone has.  It starts with: “Let's ask a lot of people all over the world which traits they have.” One way for high school students to learn how their physical characteristics, or traits, are inherited is by gathering a great deal of information about specific, easily-seen human features. Students can analyze this information to determine which traits are controlled by dominant genes and how often such dominant genes occur.  During this project, students will complete surveys, formulate hypotheses, and use the data compiled by students around the globe to test their hypotheses.  Classes can join in this unique opportunity to study genetics as experienced scientists do.  This website has the sign-up forms for the project, which runs from March 29 through May 28, 2004.

ClipArt

http://office.microsoft.com/clipart/

Microsoft has put an abundance of clipart images on its website for public use.  You can find clipart by categories like academic, animals, backgrounds, colorful, maps, occupations, people, seasons, weather, and much, much more.  Each can be downloaded for use in newsletters, websites, handouts, PowerPoint presentations, and other printed or onscreen resources.  This site is an excellent source for pictures for those term papers and presentations that accompany active participation in class activities – for teachers and students – or for the local homeowners’ association monthly bulletin.

Word Problems for Grades 5-12

http://www.stfx.ca/special/mathproblems/welcome.html

This website contains word problems in mathematics for students and teachers. The problems are classified into levels from Grade 5 to Grade 12. This is not a test; it is a set of carefully selected problems which can help students improve their problem solving skills.  If the problem is a little difficult, the student can click the hints link for clues to the solution.  The questions are designed to provide practice for the Canadian mathematics competitions in the given grade levels.  Some are simple, some are simply fun, and some will require a little work.  This is an excellent set of problems for teachers and students working on the complex thinking skills of mathematics.

Mars:  Dead or Alive

http://www.pbs.org/nova/mars

The PBS television series Nova provides this website, detailing the mission of the two Mars rovers – Opportunity and Spirit.  The rovers are searching for signs of life – which is really a search for signs of water.  This site has links to resources and activities related to that mission.  It covers everything from launch to landing, from roving to drilling, from collecting to analyzing – every activity in the rovers’ tool kits.  There are links to current news stories and to past resources.  This website enlivens the study of life, geography, and – of course – Mars.
