MedMyst

http://medmyst.rice.edu

Students of all ages are welcome to play MedMyst, an interactive, learning adventure. As you enter a futuristic world, you will help solve medical mysteries in infectious diseases.  Medical Mysteries is a problem-based adventure game that engages you, the player, in the role of scientist, historian, and detective. There are three missions, each with its own learning objectives. The knowledge gained from each mission will help you understand how infectious diseases are spread.  This Project was developed by The Center for Technology in Teaching and Learning at Rice University through a Science Education Partnership Award from the National Center for Research Resources, National Institutes of Health.

The 19th Century in Print

http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/ndlpcoop/moahtml/ncphome.html

This website is part of effort by the Library of Congress to digitize books from America’s past.  This collection comprises books and periodicals published in the United States during the nineteenth century, primarily during the second half of the century. Most of the materials were digitized through the Making of America project, a collaboration of Cornell University and the University of Michigan to preserve textual materials on deteriorating paper and make them accessible electronically. The materials selected illuminate the subject areas of education, psychology, American history, sociology, religion, and science and technology. Also included are volumes of American poetry.  This website includes digitized images of the actual pages – not just the text – from more than 1500 books and more than 20 magazines and periodicals.  You can read the actual pages from resources created in the 1800’s.

Civil Rights

http://www.bcri.org/exhibitions/permanent_exhibitions/index_page.htm

The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute provides resources and experiences to help students understand the civil rights movement of the 1960’s and its impact in today’s America.  The Institute has built a collection of documents that accurately reflects the continuing historical context in which those events have evolved to the present level of successful interracial cooperation.  In addition, records and documents on the global scope of the movement for human rights are collected.  The Institute's collection is especially useful as a resource for scholars and other professionals working in the area of global civil and human rights developments.  You can tour the exhibits that celebrate the people, places, and purposes of the movement that changed America forever.

Science Fair Projects

http://www.super-science-fair-projects.com

Science fairs often generate the most active participation of students in learning activities for the whole school year.  Volcanoes (from the baking section at the supermarket) and leaf collections (from the LocalMart garden center) go on display with regularity.  This site helps students (and their parents) learn and use the steps for conducting a successful science fair project.  It provides time-management resources, research strategies, documentation requirements, and more.  There is also a teachers’ resource page containing links to instructional resources and planning guides designed to facilitate the process.  Parents can find ways to “coach” a child without giving in to the temptation to take over the project.  Now, if there’s just one more science board at LocalMart
