Excellence in Science, Technology, and Mathematics Education

http://www.estme.org

March 15-20 was Excellence in Science, Technology, and Mathematics Education Week for 2004.  This website is the official starting point for that week of activities.  The National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education are maintaining the site throughout the year so that the resources, activities, and web links remain available to students and teachers.  The site includes “Ask a Scientist,” the “Iron Science Teacher” webcast, activities and resources for classroom and home use, and a comprehensive list of science, technology, and mathematics websites that can be incorporated into standards-based instruction or summer science experiments.  You can see photos from the Hubble Space Telescope, make cyber-visits to museums around the world, test some of Da Vinci’s inventions, and much more.

Broadband Reports

http://www.broadbandreports.com

Many families are hanging up on their dial-up access to the Internet.  In the Greenwood community, there are several alternatives to dial-up and many families are choosing between DSL and cable modems for faster Internet connections – called “broadband” connections.  Broadband connections are always on when your computer is turned on – and your phone still works for regular calls.  But which broadband type is faster?  Which provider in your area gives the best speeds, prices, and service?  Are you sure you’ll get the advertised speeds?  BroadbandReports.Com provides information about every broadband provider in your area.  It compares prices, speeds, and service records.  BroadbandReports.Com lets you check the speeds you’re getting – just by running Tests+Tools.  Your results are added to the database.  You can also see the test results received by others who are using your DSL or cable modem provider.  So, if you’re thinking about broadband or if you’ve already made the move, BroadbandReports.Com is a very helpful site in the decision-making and maintenance process.

Baseball Reference

http://www.baseball-reference.com

It’s baseball season again.  Time for the boys of summer to play the game that is America’s pastime.  Every play tests the players’ skills and the managers’ knowledge – but baseball has always been a game of statistics.  Every play is a probability problem.  Right-handed batters versus left-handed pitchers.  Moving infielders to cover the space where the batter most often hits the ground ball.  Using the relief pitcher who has been most successful against this pinch hitter.  This website has all the statistics from every game ever played and for every player who has ever played.  It has all the hitting, pitching, fielding, and other stats that are essential to understanding and enjoying the game.  The stats found on this page can be used to teach basic fractions and decimals as well as probability and statistics at all levels.  But most of all, it’s just the most comprehensive site you can find if your really want to enjoy baseball.

Wise Guide

http://www.loc.gov/wiseguide

This Wise Guide portal was designed to introduce you to the many fascinating, educational, and useful resources available from the Library of Congress.  The Wise Guide is updated monthly, much like a magazine, offering links to the best of the Library's online materials. Each of these "articles" is based on items contained in a collection, database, reading room, or other area of the Library's online offerings. You will see "more than a library" – with resources ranging from prints, photographs, films, audio recordings, maps, manuscripts, music, and digital materials to (of course) books. The Library is also a place that sponsors concerts, lectures, dance performances, film screenings, and poetry readings.   The Wise Guide is a project of the National Digital Library (NDL) Program and the Public Affairs Office of the Library of Congress.
