Home Network Access

·        At home, you may have one of two types of networks:  (1) broadband – DSL or cable modem; or (2) dial-up – through your telephone line.  See the appropriate link for more information about connection the laptop to your home network.

·        Logging into your home network

o        Each laptop user must have a userID and password to log into the laptop; this will be the teacher to whom the laptop is assigned; no other non-district users should be added to the laptop

o        At home, connect one end of the Ethernet cable (for broadband) or one end of the phone line (for dial-up) to the wall jack in your home and the other end into the appropriate port (Ethernet or modem port – those are different sizes) on the laptop

o        Start your computer and log into your home network with your usual userID and password; be sure to click the box labeled Workstation Only (since you will not be logging into the school network)

·        Open your web browser

o        If you’ve used your laptop at school, you would have been required to turn on the proxy that is required inside the district network

o        If you cannot access the Internet at home, follow these steps to turn off the proxy

o        On the browser menu bar, click Tools/Internet Options

o        Click the Connections tab at the top of the opened window

o        Click the LAN Settings button near the bottom of the window

o        In the Proxy Server section of the next screen, click off the check mark in the box labeled “Use a proxy server for your LAN…”

o        Immediately below that line, the Proxy Address and the Proxy Port will be grayed out (this information will not be deleted; it will remain grayed out until the proxy is turned on again)

o        Click OK twice to return to the browser; then click Home or Refresh

o        If you still cannot connect to the Internet, contact your Internet Service Provider to see if they are having trouble with their lines or routers

·        You will need to turn on the proxy when you return to school
