Staff Development Plan for 2006 School Technology Plan

DRAFT

January 23, 2006

Introduction

Effective use of technology for instruction in the elementary schools requires (1) computers that can access the Internet from the classroom, (2) projection devices for delivery of web-based resources to students, (3) a working awareness of web-based resources for teaching and learning that address specific learning standards, and (4) the planning for use of appropriate web-based resources in student learning activities.  Without any one of those four resources, technology will not be an effective tool in teaching or learning.

The Board of Trustees has approved the purchase and placement of laptop computers and projectors for every elementary school classroom.  That equipment will be delivered to the district by mid-February, according to the hardware vendors.

The following is a staff development plan, designed to address items (3) and (4) above, to assist elementary school teachers in integrating technology and web-based resources into their planning for and delivery of instruction.

Getting the Equipment

·         Inventory management with Follett database

·         The laptop and projector are property of the school to which it assigned and at which it is inventoried; if a teacher moves or is transferred to another school or site or if a teacher leaves the district during the school year or during the summer, that teacher must immediately return the laptop to the school; under no circumstances will a laptop or projector be transferred or moved to another school without written instructions from the Superintendent or the Superintendent’s designee

·         Projectors will be assigned to each classroom and will be managed in the same manner as other classroom equipment (except the laptops); the school will keep a list of serial numbers and room assignments as a means of accounting for each projector

Using the Equipment

·        Connecting projector to laptop

o       Laptop screen resolution

o       Focusing projector

o       Turning off the projector – extending bulb life

o       Projector care and maintenance

·        School network access (with proxy server)

o       Network or workstation only

o       Virus scans

·        Home network access (no proxy server)

o       Dial-up modem:  phone connection

o       Find a wireless network

o       Workstation only

o       Virus scans

o       Appropriate uses and care of equipment (including use by non-school personnel)

·        Management and maintenance of the equipment

o       Lost or stolen laptop or projector (policy and procedures)

o       Physical damage to the laptop or projector (replacement procedure)

o       Operating system or application failure on the laptop (re-imaging procedure)

·        Software applications on the laptop

o       Installing personal software on the laptop (policies and procedures)

o       GroupWise and WebMail (home vs. school)

o       Outlook and Outlook Express (home vs. school)

o       Internet Explorer

o       Office (Word, Excel, etc.)

o       Web access (policies and procedures)

Classroom and Instructional Applications

·        Purpose of staff development

o       Assist teachers in the use of web-based and network-based resources in planning and delivery of instruction

·        Basic knowledge of applications to be used in staff development activities

o       Internet Explorer

o       Word

o       PowerPoint

o       These will not be taught but will be used during the staff development activities

o       Additional staff development can be provided for those with need

·        Scope of staff development (each of the following will have its own outline and set of resources)

o       Strategies for finding web-based and network-based resources

o       Strategies for using technology-based resources provided by textbook companies

o       Strategies for creating/saving links to web-based resources

o       Strategies for including web-based resources in lessons and activities

o       Strategies for interactive lessons with web-based resources

o       Strategies for providing media to students and parents with web-based resources

o       Strategies for creating and posting class web pages

o       Strategies for posting web-based resources to the web for student and parent access

o       Strategies for whole-group/small-group activities using small screens for projector displays

o       Strategies for summer planning of instruction prior to the start of the school year

o       Other strategies for using the technology for teaching and learning in the classroom setting

·        Anticipated outcomes from staff development

o       All teachers will use web-based and network-based resources in planning instruction

o       All teachers will use web-based and network-based resources in lesson plans

o       All teachers will use web-based and network-based resources in delivering instruction (teaching)

o       All students will benefit from the planning and use of web-based and network-based resources in learning activities

o       The use of web-based and network-based resources in planning, teaching, and student learning will be part of the teacher evaluation process

·        Other staff development activities, as needed

All elementary teachers will participate in staff development activities, as outlined above, before the end of the 2005-2006 school year so they will be prepared to work on web-based lessons during the summer, if they choose to do so.
