Staff Development Schedule
for 2006 School Technology Plan

Introduction

Effective use of technology for instruction in the elementary schools requires (1) computers that can access the Internet from the classroom, (2) projection devices for delivery of web-based resources to students, (3) a working awareness of web-based resources for teaching and learning that address specific learning standards, and (4) the planning for use of appropriate web-based resources in student learning activities.  Without any one of those four resources, technology will not be an effective tool in teaching or learning.

A staff development plan has been designed to address items (3) and (4) above to assist elementary school teachers in integrating technology and web-based resources into their planning for and delivery of instruction.

The following strategy has been developed to ensure that each elementary teacher receiving a laptop and projector knows how to use that equipment for planning and delivery of instruction.  This document includes a calendar for requesting your school’s staff development dates and the procedures for making that request.

Staff Development Goals

Each elementary school teacher who receives a laptop and projector will receive a minimum of three hours of staff development in the use of the equipment and in strategies for using the equipment for teaching and learning.  The staff development activities must be completed before the last day of the school year so that teachers who choose to do so can take the laptops home for the summer in order to plan activities and resources for the next school year.

In addition to the elementary school teachers, teachers at BRW who already have laptops will received three hours of staff development, also.  Instructional specialists at the elementary and middle schools will receive six hours of staff development so they will be able to assist teachers in the use of the classroom technology for teaching and learning.  Principals at each elementary school will receive three hours of staff development so they can support their faculty and staff in the development of technology-based lessons and activities.

The Instructional Technology Specialist and the Director of Computing Services will develop and lead the staff development activities.  See the staff development outline at http://www.gwd50.k12.sc.us/TechPlans/StaffDevPlan.htm.

Staff Development Scheduling

In building a schedule for the staff development activities, district staff reviewed the number of laptops being delivered for each school, the length of the staff development activities for each group, and the number of days left until the end of the current school year.

The staff development activities for elementary school teachers will be limited to after-school hours.  For BRW teachers, the staff development activities will be completed during scheduled “cluster” time.  Instructional specialists will participate in one four-hour session and in one session with their own teachers.  Principals will participate in one three-hour session.

Possible Scheduled Times

Based on the number of laptop computers being delivered to elementary schools, each faculty will be split into two groups (except HOD) of 20 or fewer teachers.

There are a couple of different ways to deliver the staff development to those teachers.  One is the One-Week Way; the other way is the One-Day Way.

The One-Week Way

Teachers at the elementary schools will participate in one two-hour session (from 3:00 to 5:00) and in one one-hour session (3:00 to 4:00) on consecutive days.  Group One will have a two-hour session on Monday and a one-hour session on Tuesday; Group Two will have a two-hour session on Wednesday and a one-hour session on Thursday.  In this way, each school can be completely finished in one week.  There are seven possible weeks – and eight schools involved (see the chart below).

The One-Day Way

For schools that will be working either March 17 or March 20 (which are non-student days), we can schedule one three-hour session for half the staff in the morning and another three-hour session for the other half of the staff in the afternoon.  In this way, those schools can be completely finished in that one day.  There are two possible days – and eight schools involved (see the chart below).

Other Schedule Considerations

Sessions for principals, instructional specialists, BRW teachers, and HOD teachers have already been scheduled.  Sessions for the other eight elementary schools must be scheduled within the time left prior to PACT testing.  No sessions will be scheduled on the Thursday and Friday (March 23-24) of the week prior to SACS visits, during the week of SACS visits (March 27-31), or the week of Spring Break (April 10-14).  For elementary teachers, only make-up sessions will be scheduled on Fridays.

Principals and instructional specialists have been scheduled within the regular working day.  BRW teachers have been scheduled during the regular working day – but in their cluster time so that instruction will not be affected.  HOD will receive only 21 laptop computers; thus, their staff can be schedule in two days (instead of the four required for other elementary schools) and a two-day block was available at the beginning of the week immediately before SACS visits.

Choosing Your Staff Development Time

Schools may choose the dates they prefer, on a first-come-first-scheduled basis.

The calendar on the following pages includes pre-scheduled dates and available dates.  The calendar includes “School 1 Group 1” through “School 9 Group 2.”  The school number is used only to designate the specific sessions – you may choose any week you like.  The group number designates each half of the faculty – we can serve only half of your faculty at one time.  You can choose to put whomever you want in each group – but each group must be limited to 20 or fewer participants.

Please review the available dates and select the week that would best serve your school.  When you’ve identified the week you want, email Gary West with your preference (date and time the email was sent will determine priority).  You might consider including an alternate date range in case yours is not the first request for your preference.

In your email, include the date range (e.g., March 13-16) AND the “school number” for that date range (e.g., School 3).  The date range and the school number MUST identify the same session.

Schools that do not request a date will be assigned to a remaining date after all requested preferences are filled.

Requests should be returned to Gary West by the end of the day, Tuesday, January 31, 2006.
