Keeping Viruses Off Your Laptop Over the Summer 5/22/06
Normally, your laptop automatically gets virus definition updates
from your school's server. Over the summer, when your laptop will not be
connected to our network, you must keep your antivirus program up-to-date via
the "LiveUpdate" function. 1. Be sure you are connected to the
Internet and have changed the proxy setting in Internet Explorer. 2.Click Start/Programs. Choose "Symantec Client Security,"
then "Symantec Antivirus." 3. Click the "LiveUpdate" button. 4. In the LiveUpdate
window, click the "Next" button to find and download updates. You
may need to click “Next” several times and the updates may take a few
minutes, especially if you are on a slow Internet connection. 5. When the updates are completed,
there will be a "Finish" button that you should click. This will
return you to the "Symantec Antivirus" window. Close this window. 6. Complete this process once a
week for the summer. If you
want to make sure, you can re-open the "Symantec Antivirus" window
and check the date for your Virus definitions. |
Important Teacher Notes ·
You can check your school email during the summer, using the WebMail link in the menu at the top right of the District
50 home page. Before you can access WebMail, you must complete a short set of step in
GroupWise at school. Click this link
to see those steps: http://www.gwd50.k12.sc.us/Email/GroupWise-WebMail.htm.
·
You should be careful clicking links in email that comes to you from
unknown sources or with unsolicited offers of any kind. Some “bad guys” use such links in email to
get you to hit their site, which then installs bad software on your
computer. Click links only if you know
and trust the email source. ·
If you receive an unsolicited email that has an attachment, it is a
safe computing practice not to open the attachment. It’s better to miss a good deal than to be
infected by a bogus attachment. ·
Your bank and your broker will not ask you via email to update
personal information. Never update
personal information based on an email request to do so. Never. Your Laptop Is a Student Record Folder When you
keep student information on your laptop, the laptop becomes a student record
folder, under federal and state law. ·
Do not let others have your userID and
password to the laptop. That lets them
into student information – and into our network. ·
Do not allow your spouse, child, significant other, and anyone else
use your laptop – especially if your keep student records. · This also applies to your flash
drive and CDs used for backups. |
