All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten*

March 1, 2007 If you attended the staff development on creating WebQuests, you viewed: http://www.spa3.k12.sc.us/WebQuests.html, the Spartanburg District 3 site created several years ago.  Spartanburg teachers worked together to present step-by-step directions, templates, and a large selection of WebQuests to share, not only in their district, but also with teachers across the web.

Last week, a relative who is an Instructional Specialist in Conway, SC, sent me a Social Studies link to share with all of my “teacher friends.”  Several elementary 3rd, 4th, & 5th grade teachers created lessons to address the SC Social Studies Standards while incorporating ELA.  The units are called “Standards in a Sack” and can be found here: http://www3.hcs.k12.sc.us/Departments/Instruction/SocialStudies/conference/Conferenceindex.html.  These units are wonderful, and it is great to be able to share them.

The two references above brought to mind Robert Fulgham.  He offered some prudent advice in his book, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.  It was popular in the early 1990’s, when one could find his lines on at least one poster in every school.  Sometimes it is a good thing to revisit the past, especially wisdom like this: “share everything, live a balanced life, and when you go out into the world, hold hands and stick together.”  Perhaps this could be the answer to some of our time issues.  If teachers across the district in the same grade level or teaching the same subject would work together to create lessons that integrate technology and then share them, wouldn’t that cut down lesson planning time?  Why not get together, divide the work, and share the load?  (That’s the “sticking together” part.)  This is not a new idea in our district.  It has been tried before, but now, more than ever, we need to try it again.

Teachers?  The link to “Teacher Created Lessons” will be found on the Instructional Technology home page and on the TWTW page.  I’ll add to it if you will!  Send your lessons to me (hughesc@gwd50.org) to be posted.  Let’s not have a blank page on our website!

I look forward to hearing from you!
