Technology Courses

5/1/08 Gain recertification credit at your own convenience this summer!  The SC Department of Education offers online courses for teachers with SC professional teaching certificates.  Registration for summer online courses is now open!  There is a $30 registration fee for renewal credit courses (20 and 40 renewal point courses) and 2 hr graduate courses cost $54 plus $30 registration fee = $84 total.  Courses are filling up quickly.

 

The following courses are being offered this summer (course start date June 9th- July 28, 2008):

Important Teacher Notes

·   ePortfolio
The first group of teachers needing to recertify their technology proficiencies completed their portfolios this month and lived to tell about it!  Expect to hear from your School Technology Leaders before the end of school to learn how to get started in the ePortfolio system. 

·   Student Engagement Conference
On July 30 & 31, our district is sponsoring a conference featuring many of our own engaging teachers as presenters as well as visiting presenters.  Concurrent sessions will run both days, during which time there will be eight technology integration sessions!  Registration begins May 5th.  Click here for the agenda and here to register.

·   Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats
Have you had the opportunity to try to open a document created in Word 2007 with your Word 2003?  If not, it will only be a matter of time before you do!  By installing the Compatibility Pack in addition to Microsoft Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003, you will be able to open, edit, and save files using the file formats new to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007.  The Compatibility Pack can also be used in conjunction with the Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003, Excel Viewer 2003, and PowerPoint Viewer 2003 to view files saved in these new formats.  To download the Compatibility Pack, click here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en

§  NOAA’s Ocean Service Education (3-5; 6-12)

This site offers teachers a wealth of resources about oceans, coasts, and charting and navigation.  Topics covered include: corals, currents, estuaries, geodesy, nonpoint source pollution, and tides and water levels.  Student and teacher guides, interactive quizzes, exercises with real data and interviews with NOS scientists are part of each lesson.  Each lesson also includes focus questions, objectives, background information, evaluations, and extensions.

Free online mathematics enrichment resources, designed to develop subject knowledge and problem solving skills for students from 8-19.  New content is published each month and there is also an archive of past months.  The problems are selected each month to offer a variety of skills at different age levels along with supporting materials such as articles, games, and other resources.

§  The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History

The GLI of American History offers primary source documents and educational resources from all eras of American history available for free online.  Features include podcasts of historians discussing their work, lesson plans on major topics in American history, a searchable database of primary source documents, featured documents with printable images, and transcripts for classroom use, and online exhibitions.
