It’s Here!

8/15/07 Welcome Back!  Although the calendar still says summer, the first day of school is just days away.  The year is new, and everyone is fresh.  The tone for the year will be set in these first days.  All around our district, changes have taken place: new schools, new faces, and new technologies.  When new students walk into our classrooms, we expect them to be open to new ideas and concepts, and to be willing to learn.  It is up to us to take the lead in setting the right example.  Try a new or different way to integrate technology every week, and share your results with your colleagues.  Together we will improve teaching and learning!

Hopefully, none of us will be like teacher, Stu Pruslin.  When asked about his favorite back-to-school activity, Pruslin replied, "Taking sedatives!"

Use lowercase.  Valid now - August 31, 2008

·          One of the first things teachers should do to start the school year is to get parents’ email addresses.  Email is an important tool for communicating with parents about student behavior, assignments, attendance, grades, projects, and other important topics.

·          Teachers should be sure to have their laptops at work every day.  The laptop is an important teaching tool.  In addition, it is the main tool through which teachers are to take student attendance, give student grades, and regularly check their district email.

·          The best way to get help with a technology problem is to follow the Help Desk Tab on the Greenwood School District 50 home page and create a ticket detailing your technology problem.

Research Shows: Students Actually Use the Internet for Education

Do you think that kids spend all of their time online participating in social networking and downloading music?  Dave Nagel, in an article in the August issue of T.H.E. Journal, has this to say:

“New research released by the National School Boards Association reveals data showing we all might need to reevaluate our assumptions: It turns out kids are actually using the Internet for educational purposes.  In fact, according to the study, "Creating & Connecting: Research and Guidelines on Online Social--and Educational--Networking," the percentage of children specifically discussing schoolwork online outpaces the percentage that spend time downloading music.
