Important Teacher Notes

·     The district now has a "Safe Videos" web page where staff members can submit YouTube videos for approval, and view already approved videos.  Please visit http://www.gwd50.org/youtube for a brief instructional video on this new system.

·     The District Staff Development Calendar is now available just on the district webpage, and can only be viewed by employees who are logged into the webpage.

·     If your teaching certificate or your technology certification expires by June 2009, you have already been contacted about renewing your technology certification.  By this time, you should have taken your self-assessment(s) and you should be working on your portfolio.  This is a reminder that you must reach at least level 3 to be proficient and complete and have approved a portfolio on level 3 (or 4) by May 1, 2009 to document your proficiency.  ePortfolio workshops are ongoing at the Genesis Education Center.  Check your monthly staff development calendar for dates and times.

·     Mark your calendar!  The Upstate Technology Conference is scheduled for June 24 & 25 and the website is up and running!  The conference is FREE and not to be missed!  See: http://www.greenville.k12.sc.us/utc/

Inference

·     Inferring How and Why Characters Change
A think-aloud procedure is used here to model how to infer character traits and recognize a character's growth across a text.

·     Author Study: Improving Reading Comprehension Using Inference and Comparison
Students review several texts by one illustrator/author, practice making inferences about that author, and then check their inferences against the author's biography.

·     School Space: An Analysis of Map Perceptions
Students analyze sketch maps produced by different people on the basis of their mental maps, and then draw inferences about the factors that influence perceptions of places.

·     A Museum as Time Capsule
The objective of this activity, is that students will be able to develop visual literacy skills and specifically make defensible inferences based on observation of perceived evidence.

·     Science on Screen: Evidence and Inference
Students explore the relationship between evidence and inference, and learn how scientific research informs the development of a science-based film.

·     Inferences
Students will make inferences when reading an interview.  (Time for Kids Mini-Lesson)
