Tech Tips

3/15/09

·     To find out the names of the buttons on MS Office Word toolbars, hover the mouse over any button and its name will appear in a box near the mouse pointer.

·     To find out what the buttons on the toolbars do, choose “What's This?” from the Help menu.  The mouse pointer will turn into a pointer with a '?' symbol.  Click on any button (or any other element or object on the screen) and Word will give you some information.  Also, Shift+F1 will turn on the “What's This?” feature.

·     Hold down Alt while you press the Print Screen key (Prt Scr) and only the open window and not the entire desktop will be copied.  Also, if you have multiple windows open on your desktop, it will only copy the window that is on the top.

·     Need to insert a drawing object (such as an oval, rectangle, line, or AutoShape) into your Word document?  Here are the steps:

1.    Click on the icon of the tool that represents the type of object you want to create, or select it from Insert > Picture > AutoShape from the file menu.

2.    Click within your document at one corner of where you want the shape to appear.

3.    Drag the mouse to the opposite corner for the object.

4.   When you release the mouse button, the object appears in the document and you can manipulate it as needed.

Important Teacher Notes

·   Time is running out!  If your teaching certificate or your technology certification expires by June 2009, you have already been contacted about renewing your technology certification.  By this time, you should have taken your self-assessment(s) and you should be working on your portfolio.  This is just a reminder that you must reach at least level 3 to be proficient and complete and have approved a portfolio on level 3 (or 4) by May 1, 2009 to document your proficiency.  ePortfolio workshops are ongoing at the Genesis Education Center.  Check the calendar on the district homepage for dates and times.

·   ePortfolio help sessions:
3/25 -
3:30-5:00; Room 503, Genesis
3/26 -
3:30-5:00; Room 503, Genesis

3/30 -  3:30-5:00; Room 503, Genesis

·   Mark your calendar!  The Upstate Technology Conference is scheduled for June 24 & 25 and the website is up and running!  The conference is FREE and not to be missed!  See: http://www.greenville.k12.sc.us/utc/

·   The District Staff Development Calendar is now available only on the district webpage, and can only be viewed by employees who are logged into the webpage.

·   The district now has a "Safe Videos" web page where staff members can submit YouTube videos for approval, and view already approved videos.  Please visit http://www.gwd50.org/youtube for a brief instructional video on this new system.
