Personal Laptop Purchase
Available Again

6/1/06  If you would like to purchase a laptop for your own use or for a family member who is going to college or for some other reason, you can order through the District by June 15.

In order to purchase a personal laptop through the District, you must send a check or money order for the total amount to the Business Department at the district office building before 4:30 pm on Thursday, June 15, 2006.

The laptop model is the Gateway M465-E, which is an upgrade to the model purchased for teachers this spring.  The M465-E includes Windows XP Professional (SP2), 512 Mb of memory, a 40 Gb hard drive, a carrying case, stereo speakers, mouse, 256 Mb flash drive, 15-inch screen, and more.

See the attached flier for more details and a complete description of the Model 465-E.

Important Teacher Notes

·   Do not allow other people to work on your laptop if you have a problem with it; that includes spouse, children, the guy next door, or one of the local computer service companies.

·   District 50 has paid for the warranty on your laptop.  If anyone else opens that laptop to work on it, that warranty could – and probably will be – voided.

·   District 50 has also paid for accident protection for your laptop.  If you accidentally damage the machine, we can have it repaired or replaced without additional cost.

·   Warranty and accident protection do not cover abuse of the laptop.  Abuse includes leaving it in your car so it is damaged by heat or cold.

·   Warranty and accident protection do not cover loss or theft of the laptop.  Please be sure the laptop is kept in a safe and secure place.  If it is lost or stolen, report it to OCS immediately.

·   If your laptop develops problems or stops working, call the Office of Computing Services immediately (941-5431) to arrange to bring it in for diagnostic testing and service.

Teacher Technology Proficiency and ePortfolio

As part of the five-year recertification process, teachers must demonstrate proficiency in the use of technology for teaching and learning.  The State Department of Education has licensed an online application – ePortfolio – for managing teacher technology proficiency.

ePortfolio will be available to teachers and administrators at the start of the 2006-2007 school year.  It will use NETS (the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers), which have been developed by ISTE (the International Society for Technology in Education).

Teachers will answer a set of online questions about their technology skills and use.  From that set of questions, ePortfolio will generate a technology profile of that teacher.  That profile becomes the baseline from which the system recommends activities and projects to assist the teacher in moving toward proficiency.

The system keeps track of four levels of skills.  A teacher must reach Level 3 to be considered “proficient.”  Level 4 skills will identify teachers who can mentor other teachers in their technology competencies.
